Netballers win four premierships

Warrandyte netballers have brought home four summer competition premiership titles.

Warrandyte finished the Summer Doncaster and District Netball Association competition with five teams competing In Grand Finals.

The previous week a further three Warrandyte Netball Club teams were eliminated in close first semi-final matches.

  • Under 15/1 Magpies lost to East Doncaster Ravens 21-26.
  • Under 17/1 Eagles lost to Koonung Blazers 26-30.
  • Open A Falcons lost to Koonung Energizers 26-31.

The first to win the premiership were the Under 13/1 Warrandyte Brumbies, coached by Karin Green, assisted by Jess Dusting.

The team was Alexandra Drohan, Brenna Edsell, Sara Febbo, Ysabel Galley, Keeley Green, Klrllee Hosler, Courtney Ratcliffe, Gabby Ryan and Zoe Van Gulick.

The final score in a close game was Warrandyte Brumbies 24 to DYC Cub 21.

“It was an awesome effort from every team member,” said Karin Green.

Club President Sonya Febbo told the team alter their win that they had “Improved significantly over the season and as a club we are very proud of you today.”

The second winning team were the Under 15/3 Warrandyte Robins, coached by Karen May.

The team was Darcy Bulman, Akela Coutts, Shelby, Greenlaw, Gemma Lindsay-Knape, Kellie May, Sophie Richardson, Julia Robertson, Ruby Stansfield, and Hannah Thornton.

The Warrandyte Robins comfortably defeated the Koonung Hotshots 21-13.

Sonya Febbo, standing in on the day for coach Karen May, paid tribute to Karen’s work with the girls since last season.

“Player skill levels have improved since earlier in the year. The team includes a lot
of player new to the game but they still finished top of the ladder at the season’s end.”

The under 17/2 Warrandyte Kangas, coached by Jacinta Kemm and managed by her father Garry, was the third Warrandyte Netball Club team to become premiers.

Undefeated throughout the season, they achieved a 31-26 victory over the Koonung Flames.

The team was Phoebe Baker-Gibb, Nicole Culkerman, Rhianna Kemm, Alysce Mclaren, Megan Seymour, Rhiannon Simpson, Bethany Whitcher and Sarah Green.

“I am very pleased and very proud. Everyone played a fantastic game and worked
really well as a team,” said Jacinta Kemm.

Th final Warrandyte premiership team was the Warrandyte Open B Hawks, coached by Lyn Dyason, with Jan Bryar.

The team Is Cherise Angelotti-Casey, Jennifer Barrett, Patricia Barrett, Erika
Dyason, Amella Fraser-McKelvle, Jacinta Kemm, Alice Saunders, Carly Sayer, Kristle Turner and Jess Alwood.

Warrandyte Open 8 Hawks defeated the Koonung Flyers 26-21.

Dyason was “very relieved” with the win.

“The team was undefeated all season. It was a great game, with two regular players
out and one unwell on the day but the team still pulled through with a win,” she said.

Runners-up were the Warrandyte Wallabies Under 13/3 team who went down to the Koonung Astrals 9-18.

Coached by Sarah Lewis, 15, and Helena Dwyer, 14, the team includes Sarah Abdurazak, Jemima Bekirovski, Julia Donovan, Vanessa Krynicki, Maranthi Papastergiadis, Asta Phillip-Owen, Nicola Pinolo, Cara Watson, and Chloe Yap.

The Warrandyte Netball Club fielded 18 teams in the 2007 Summer DDNA season, making it one of the biggest clubs in the district competition.

The teams included two Open teams, three Under 17 teams, four Under 15 teams, four Under 13 teams, and five Under 11 teams (who do not compete in finals).

The 2008 Winter DDNA season starts on Saturday, 8 March.
